WGA Asks Members for Strike Authorization Vote
The members of the Writers Guild of America, both East and West, moved one step closer to a writers work stoppage when an email message sent to members on Monday asked for a strike authorization vote.
Currently in negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, the WGA’s current contract is set to expire Oct. 31.
An authorization to strike would allow for a WGA walkout, the first since 1988, if a contract is not agreed upon by Oct. 31.
Negotiations with the AMPTP have been slow, with the two organizations disagreeing over a residual system.
The WGA is vying for a system that includes Internet distribution, while the AMPTP is looking to completely retool the current system with a new one that would not offer residuals until production costs are recouped.
AMPTP President Nick Counter posted a response on the organization’s Web site, saying a call for a strike authorization vote is not uncommon.
“The Writers Guild’s strike authorization is notable only because its negotiators seem intent on striking without seriously addressing the AMPTP’s proposals, and with no regard for the devastating impact on their members, fellow unions and this industry,” he said.
