KCET Picks Up ‘BBC World News’ Distribution From WLIW

KCET-TV, the Los Angeles-based public television station, will become the new U.S. partner making “BBC World News” newscasts available to broadcast audiences in this country.

The deal is set to take effect after the current agreement with Long Island public station WLIW-TV expires in October. There was no immediate information on why WLIW did not renew the contract.

The new agreement, which will not affect the newscasts seen on the BBC America and BBC World News cable channels, was announced Monday.

A KCET representative said the new deal does not guarantee any distribution beyond what the Los Angeles station itself can provide. However, the “BBC World News” is “highly prized” among public stations and KCET will work to “assure that it is easily available to stations that want to carry it.”

Please read the New York Times, 30 April 2008 article titled: "A Public TV Alternative To News From BBC" by Elizabeth Jensen. This will give some background as to WLIW planning its own program focusing on international issues. It is interesting reading.
