CBS has given good news to bubble shows “The Unit,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”
All three shows have been renewed for next season, according to people familiar with the network’s decisions. There had been buzz about the “Unit” and “HIMYM” renewals, but CBS did not call producers until Tuesday afternoon to make things official.
Not returning, however: The James Woods drama “Shark,” which aired for two seasons. Also gone from CBS: Freshman drama “Moonlight,” which had been attracting a cult audience.
As for “Old Christine,” it’s been given a 22-episode order. That’s the first time in the show’s three-season life it’s been given a complete episodic load.
“The Unit,” “HIMYM” and “Shark” all are produced by 20th Century Fox TV, while Warner Bros. is behind “Old Christine.”

I can't believe they'd cancel Moonlight and Shark and keep total crap like New/old Cristine! Talk about going for the lowest common denominator!

The only thing certain is that fans of Moonlight will lobby other networks to pick up the show.
Certainly there's a network out there that wouldn't sniffle at nearly 8 million viewers on a Friday night...a show that won the People's Choice...whose fans have sponsored blood drives, food drives, and other charitable efforts all in the name of the show?
CW? FOX? Any SMART networks out there?

Moonlight fans, unite! There has to be a network with the brains and the b@11$ to pick up this incredible show, with its built-in fan base with lots of money to spend on sponsors. IT IS SO NOT OVER. --Allegrita (crying, but determined!)

I am heartsick over Moonlight not given a second season. How can CBS be so blind. They renew that horrible show old christine with 22 episodes?.
CBS is dead to me now i will never watch a show on this network again.

We need to work to save our show. If CBS doesn't want it, some network will. It could work on the CW, FX, FOX, etc etc. We refuse to let our show die!!!!!!!!
Posted by m00nlight_babe | May 13, 2008 12:11 PM
Too bad about Moonlight. Odd that CBS didn't replace it as the lead-in to Numbers, which has been renewed, much sooner if there was that much doubt about its strength.
I understand there have been difficulties behind the scenes on the production of the show, so perhaps CBS simply wanted out of any further commitment to it.

I can't believe it, wait... yes I can. I am soooooo done with network tv, especially CBS. They keep crap shows and cancel a fangtastic show like Moonlight!?!
They are dead to me now. Along with every other network, except Fox. I'd love for Moonlight to be picked up by Fox or any other cable channel.... Sci Fi channel, are you listening?
I'm so disgusted.

What is CBS thinking! Cancelling Moonlight is the worst decision ever. The fans of Moonlight are the most loyal fans ever. Doesn't CBS realize we will stop watching their shows. Not because we are vindictive, but because we can't support a network that doesn't listen to or respect their fans. I will miss Moonlight and I will hope another station will have the foresight to pick this show up. It's not too late CBS - change your mind and keep Moonlight, please!

OMG! I can't believe you would cancel "Moonlight". Regardless of the show attracting a cult audience. The show is great. I love the actors involved in the show and I will truly miss it. Moonlight Fans we must lobby for another network to take over. FYI: If your ratings fall ahort it's because of you cancelling "Shark" and "Moonlight"!

Wah, wah, wah, illiterate moron SF fanboi geeks who can't bother using proper spelling, capitalization, grammar, punctuation or usage.
Guess what, chronic masturbators. The only people watching that show were you social misfits who are not CBS' target demographic. That's how things are done in television and there's nothing you can do about it. At least you can still masturbate to Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Get out of your parents' basements and GET A LIFE, LOSERS!

Well - Shark jumped the Shark! Sorry - it had to be said! Great opening premise with former defense attorney becoming a DA! Bunch of crap this season with angst over daughter, old murder abetting, back to defense...blah, blah, blah. Should have stuck with great original idea!
Posted by ML | May 13, 2008 2:19 PM
I can understand cancelling Shark, but Moonlight? That Alex O'Loughlin is a breakout star. I don't understand how the nets make these decisions. Can we please give a show time to build an audience instead of making these quick decisions? My God-I can think of so many shows that didn't start out great, but ultimately made the Top 10 and Top 20 lists. And what about Friday night? Not exactly the greatest HUTs or PUTs. Please re-think this decision and bring Moonlight back.

Real TV's comment about fantasizing over Jennifer Love Hewitt was disgusting and offensive and should have been removed from the site.

Very disappointing. How can cbs do this to a show that i thought was getting stronger rateings each week. It makes me not want to watch a new show until we know it is going to be on a few years. This has happen way to often to us. Hopefully fox or sci fi can pick this show up.
Posted by Jeff M. | May 13, 2008 2:42 PM
I'm going to be one of the few here and voice my disappointment at the cancellation of Shark.
It's ratings were good, moving it around the schedule certainly didn't hurt any, and it will be sad to lose the chance to watch James Woods each week.
I can't comment on Moonlight as I've never seen the show and couldn't even tell you what it's about or when it's on.
I'd also like to tell people not to bother watching the Shark season/series finale next week, as it sets up an end-of-season cliffhanger that will now never be resolved.

Though I am a bit surprised that CBS would dump "Moonlight" it does unfortunately have that classic cult show profile: a very loyal base but limited broad audience potential which doesn't grow with time, no matter how much the fans wish it would. Might be a nice pick-up for some other network or cable outlet, though, with less at stake.
I don't think anyone can say that CBS doesn't listen to fans -- look at the bath they just took when they tried bringing "Jericho" back. A million peanuts in the mail is cute, but it doesn't translate to new viewers as the network learned the hard way. It's sad to lose a favorite show, but this is where the business part of show business comes in.
"The New Adventures of Old Christine" is a hit waiting to happen, despite sporadic scheduling and not being available on CBS' website for viewing and sampling (big mistake there). As one of the funniest women on television (next to Tina Fey), Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a valuable commodity and in the long run will do much more for CBS than "Moonlight" ever would have.
Now, if we could just get rid of all that "reality" programming....
Posted by The Flaming Nose | May 13, 2008 3:08 PM
CBS needs to bring Moonlight back. The shows they want to keep seem dumb. Maybe a reason Moonlight didn't have such good ratings during the writers strike was because cbs put the price is right on during moonlight time slot.
Moonlight needs a season 2

I cannot believe that CBS is cancelling Moonlight? Really? Give me a break. This show is really awesome. I would like to know the reasoning behind the cancelling of Moonlight.
Posted by CHRISTY | May 13, 2008 3:16 PM
Fox has no trouble having its post-football Sunday night lineup start on time because it puts easily droppable comedy reruns in the 7:00 and 7:30 time slots.
So if a game runs long, they lop off one or both reruns and have the sports people fill until 7:30 or 8:00.
CBS doesn't really have that luxury because of the show in the 7-8 hour -- 60 Minutes, which ain't goin' nowhere.
Posted by SteveR | May 13, 2008 3:26 PM
Moonlight is a terrific show. why doesnt the network know this??
How stupid can you get. maybe sci fi would pick it up. I love how crap survives and the good stuff always gets canceled. maybe we could have american idol on every channel then we could throw our TV's out the window once and for all
Posted by yvonne | May 13, 2008 3:27 PM
Classic cult profile. Interesting thought. If memory serves me right, another little show had a similar profile and went on to have a space shuttle named after it as well as not one major motion picture but 6 films. Let's see, CBS wasn't that Star Trek??? Cutting the head off the golden goose doesn't seem to be the wisest move to be making in this market. Just my two cents worth.
Posted by Moonshadow | May 13, 2008 3:32 PM
I can't believe that the few shows I watch on that network are the two the cancel. Love Moonlight!
Posted by B.J. | May 13, 2008 4:30 PM
Thanks CBS. First Jericho now Shark. I'm glad that The Unit is coming back but Shark did pretty well considering it was moved to Sundays where it was constantly on late due to football overruns. It has performed nicely following NCIS garnering similar ratings.
Sooner or later, the golden goose eggs of CSI will crack and then what will you do CBS?
Posted by Sonya | May 13, 2008 4:42 PM
It seems like vampire shows have a tough time making it on TV. I liked Blade. I loved Bloodlines
and I thought Moonlight was excellent. Back to re runs of Angel.
Posted by Randy C. | May 13, 2008 5:49 PM
I think CBS is shooting itself in the foot here and they will regret this, especially after December when "Twilight" hits the theaters. Everything vampire will be what's hot.
Anybody here old enough to remember the shows "Beauty and the Beast" and "Moonlighting" back in the 80's? Those shows had a rough start, but as the romances on them grew, the shows took off and they both had several great seasons. The love story on Moonlight hasn't even had a chance to develop yet! Mic and Sarah could be the next Maddie and Addison, or Catherine and Vincent! Come on, somebody, feel the love and give romance a chance to sink its teeth!
Posted by Cathy | May 13, 2008 6:17 PM
I'm totally disheartened that CBS has dropped the show MOONLIGHT.
That and CSI (Original Recipe) were the only two CBS shows I watched. From now on, I'll just download CSI from torrent sites, because I don't want to give CBS *one more penny* after the abrupt cancellation of one of the best new shows on TV.
At least we still have SUPERNATURAL for another season.
Posted by WayneInNYC | May 13, 2008 7:02 PM
Predictable network behavior. I never watched Moonlight, but did watch Shark and Jericho. The networks would rather put garbage "reality" or "talent" shows on TV. I guess these sell more ad time/revenue than actual TV shows worth watching.
CBS is not alone in this. As I am typing this, the series finale of Womens Murder Club is on. I just can't understand the need for instant gratification the networks have to where they won't give a show much of a chance.

The most sensible comment of all here was from Ardienne. Use those contacts to support a show you love. Stop whining here with comments that few people will read, and that no network programming execs will ever see.
I watched Moonlight many times and thought it was very well done. Why not congratulate CBS
for having the guts to air it?
There are many reasons beyond ratings why a show is dumped or kept by networks, which rarely reverse their decisions.
Look at Scrubs going from NBC to ABC. Go figure.

We are not a cult...I'm a 48 year old female who loves to watch drama, romance and action stories. And when the main actor is tall and handsome you could say that I'm hooked. Moonlight has alot to offer it's viewer's. Yah, it's about vampires and that is the reason I was a late bloomer on watching the show at first. But, as usual there was nothing else on one night and I watch episode 12 on rerun. I was intinally hooked had to find episodes 1 thru 11. And did on you tube. WE ARE FANS not A CULT.....
Posted by Debbie | May 14, 2008 3:55 AM
I agree. We are NOT a cult. Just a bunch of fans who love the romance, the drama, and the comedy. It is rare for a show to have all of these qualities at the same time. Not to mention the terrific acting of everyone on the show. Please give us Season 2 CBS!
If CBS doesn't want you - is there any other network who would like it? FOX??
Posted by Francine | May 14, 2008 8:12 AM
I cannot believe CBS cancelled the People's Choice for Best New Drama! If a show voted as the best by the people can be cancelled, why would we EVER want to show loyalty to that network? So 8 million people don't count here? I don't get that at all. Hey CBS... keyword here is "People's." Am really curious to know just HOW they calculate those ratings anyway. The Neilsen's have never approached me or anyone I know. Not one of the many Moonlight fans out there that I've spoken with either. They are missing all of us who ARE loyal to the show and watch week after week. It is so sad that the show was doomed the minute the writer's strike hit... probably before. I don't recall more than about 2 or 3 commercials for the show since the new season began. Then CBS brings back only 4 episodes, and don't advertise the best new show on television! Please tell me how The Big Bang Theory got renewed when Moonlight surpassed its ratings each week!!! And the other "so-so" shows like How I Met Your Mother and New Adventures of Old Christine are RENEWED??????? Go figure. What is wrong with this picture? CBS barely advertises the show and it STILL gets an average of 8 million viewers (more than likely much larger if they REALLY counted the fans!). What would happen if they gave it a REAL time slot AND advertised it? Probably surpass Without a Trace! I'm sticking with the network who picks this show up! They will have my loyalty. Goodbye CBS!

So glad they are renewing The Unit --pretty good show -- disappointed about Shark, though...we all know CBS will be apopletic when CSI finally leaves the airwaves...then maybe , just maybe they'll listen to viewers of those newer shows that we say we like and CBS defecates on our comments.

Maybe Mick could go into the CBS offices and turn some of these yo-yo's into vampires. Then he would get some empathy from them.

Shark is a show that provokes thought and intuitive thinking. It is more than entertainment. This show is about excellent character development, moral and ethical dilemmas and their resolution. Why is it that shows requiring thought are cancelled and mindless programs are renewed?

what the hell are they thinking cancelling shark???
they keep crap like the big bang theory and new adventures of old christine on the air but a show with 10 million viewers they cancel!! I'm a fan of the unit as well but id rather see it cancelled than shark.

CBS must not!!! cancel Moonlight--do they not see how many viewers wish to keep this fledgling series on air???? The series is like a book that has just started to open and to educate and we want to be able to continue to read and enjoy!!
Posted by AnnieOOO | May 15, 2008 11:14 PM
I agree with Vickivamps' comments about no longer watching CBS shows since CBS doesn't listen to or respect their fans. It would be nice if CBS would give Moonlight another season, on a different night, to see if its numbers increased. The People's Choice award plus the number of viewers it has despite airing on Friday nights should indicate it deserves a second chance. Too bad the Mick St. John character is a detective and not a forensic scientist - CBS doesn't have any problems creating and renewing CSI (a show I love)and the many unoriginal clones it has spun off from CSI. Maybe if CBS sees a large decrease in viewers for its most popular series (CSI, Criminal Minds, etc.) it will realize what happens when viewers are told their opinions don't matter.

I do not watch much on cbs anymore and now, there is no reason to. Seasons are over, can live without ghost whisperer and csi but am so over with any reality shows. CBS is all about dummying down it's viewers.

This is not the first time that CBS has cancelled an award-winning show; this is the case with MOONLIGHT. MOONLIGHT overcame so many odds and has built a huge following. MOONLIGHT has so much going for it -- great cast, interesting stories, a unique mix of lightness and horror, sci-fi and humanity, humor and drama.
This is not the first time that inane, uninteresting shows have been renewed; I won't name any particulars. Fill in the blanks yourself.

We all have our tastes in tv shows. Bad mouthing one show does not make your fav any more palatable to a non fan. I certainly dont consider myself a CULT viewer of any particular type of tv program. However I loved MOONLIGHT, it got better each week. I waited for this Friday show to escape for 1 whole hour into a world filled with love, friendship, and fantasy mixed in with a right overshadows wrong theme. I will follow this program to whichever network is fortunate and clever enough to air it. Even if that means I will have to pay for a premium channel.

"...when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there without a book, magazine, newspaper, profit-and-loss sheet, or rating book to distract you—and keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland.
You will see a procession of game shows, violence, audience participation shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence and cartoons. And, endlessly, commercials—many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And, most of all, boredom. True, you will see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, try it."
Not much has changed in 47 years!

I had to add a comment from Harrogate in England, to say how very upset I am about Shark being cancelled! Yes the drippy family life story line was a bit pointless but the rest of the content was fab! Where will I get my James Woods fix after NCIS on a Friday night now, very much saddened!

I am very disappointed about Shark being cancelled. It is unfortunate that mindless dribble gets renewed and good shows gets cancelled. How many "Survivors" can there be!!!

It's about time CBS is going to put The Unit back on tv. Moonlight is a boring show for cult loving people. Just make sure you(CBS)puts The Unit on after NCIS!!

I am totally appaled that cbs would keep garbage tv like old christine and let a totally entertaining show like shark be cancelled. shame on all of you. there are so amny mindless shows being renwed and good ones are being let go. shark hopefully will find a home on a network that appreciates it talented acting and intriging plots.
