What Recession? TV Sales Soar
North American television shipments in the second quarter jumped 28% from a year earlier, marking the largest leap in at least four years and defying the U.S. economic downturn, NPD Group unit DisplaySearch said today. Samsung gained share in the flat-panel TV market.
TV manufacturers shipped 9.3 million sets during the quarter as shipments of liquid-crystal display televisions, which accounted for 80% of all TVs sent, surged 52%, according to the report. The jump, the largest year-over-year increase since DisplaySearch started tracking shipments in 2004, was also fed by a 34% rise in plasma-TV shipments.
U.S. consumers are buying more TVs amid the economic downturn as they prepare for the switchover to all-digital broadcasts from analog next February. As prices for liquid-crystal display sets are expected to fall about 15% this year, LCD shipments to North America are expected to jump 25% in 2008 to more than 30 million units, DisplaySearch said in June.
Samsung’s North American market share rose 4% during the quarter to 19% as the company more than doubled its North American flat-screen TV sales from a year earlier. Sony, closely held Vizio and LG Electronics, the second-, third- and fourth-largest North American flat-screen TV makers during the quarter, each saw their market share drop despite year-over-year sales increases.
Samsung’s market-share gain may have come at a cost. The company said last month that its second-quarter loss from its television-making operations widened as it dropped prices and paid more for materials to keep its worldwide lead among liquid-crystal display TV manufacturers.
