11% of Online Americans Now Using Twitter
Online microblogging services like Twitter, a popular social media tool for many media companies and television networks, are used by 11% of online Americans, according to a research report conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project in December and released today. That’s up from 9% of online Americans using the service in November.
Back in May, Pew reported online microblogging usage at about 6% of online Americans.
Twitter users skew young, with one in five online Americans in the 18-to-24 demo using Twitter. But Pew also said the median age of a Twitter user is 31, compared to 27 for MySpace, 26 for Facebook and 40 for LinkedIn.
Media and online video companies such as Hulu and Veoh regularly use Twitter to track consumer feedback and to interact with users.

Hi,
Is the 11% just active users, people who don't participate, or just sign-ups?

Over 30 million people are using Twitter? Totally inflated by Pew (extrapolated of course) and ridiculous. I have three accounts myself and so do most serious Tweeters. Pew = FAIL.

The headline is a bit misleading. "Like Twitter" is not the same as "Twitter". The authors of the study casually lumped Twitter with the entire universe of any service that allows "status updates". That's probably great marketing for Twitter! The study does not disclose how much of the 11 percent is Twitter versus other services.

I can't imagine this is nearly true.
I certainly doubt that if you stood around asking people in any supermarket that 1 out of 10 people would have an account with a "service like Twitter".
I presume the numbers are be pretty off.
I know that I have signed up for.... I think 6 accounts over time. Many people that I know have more than 1 account.

I'd love to see where they're collecting these stats! b/c this number is WAY up from the last report I got re: usage on Twitter.
Not that it's not possible, esp after the elections showing tweets & everyone wanting to jump on board and get their "10 minutes of fame" ...

According to one article I read, there are now over 250 Twitter clones on the internet.
So, in reading this article, pay particular attention to the opening sentence, "Online microblogging services like Twitter, a popular social media tool for many media companies and television networks, are used by 11% of online Americans." It does not say that 11% of Americans are using Twitter.
