An NBC soap opera will air the first gay marriage between two men on a daytime soap this week. The Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker reports that the wedding starts today, Tuesday, on "Days of Our Lives," and will air over three consecutive episodes.

The story focuses on the wedding of Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis. The plotline started in 2011, when Sonny, played by Freddie Smith, was introduced to the show’s fictional town of Salem and started its first gay storyline.

“The planning happened in a whirlwind, at least in soap opera terms. The couple got engaged on the Valentine's Day episode of this year,” the piece notes.

It’s not the first same-sex marriage on daytime TV, however. A marriage between two women was shown on “All My Children” in 2009.
