“Cleveland news anchor Kristi Capel was very impressed with Lady Gaga’s ‘Sound of Music’ tribute at the Oscars. Even Julie Andrews herself called it ‘wonderful,’” reports a story on the website of Time magazine.
The story continues, “Unfortunately, though, Capel had a very strange (and offensive) way of communicating her thoughts about Gaga.
“ ‘It’s hard to really hear her voice with all the jigaboo music that she does,’ Capel said. ‘She has a gorgeous voice. I never knew.’”
Later, Capel apologized to at least one viewer on Twitter, the story says, with this tweet: “I do apologize if offended you, I didn’t know the meaning behind it or that it was even a word. Thank you for watching.”
According to Capel’s Twitter profile, she is an “Anchor for Fox 8 News in the Morning, wife, mommy, marathon runner, Miss Missouri USA 2006.”
Says the New York Daily News, “Station honchos said they have addressed the flap with the morning anchor.
‘Kristy apologized on the air shortly after making the remark. She did not know what the word meant but that is no excuse for using it,’ Fox 8 news director Andy Fishman told The News.
“We have spoken with her and are confident nothing like this will happen again.”
The station, WJW in Cleveland, Ohio, is a Fox affiliate owned by Tribune.
