The Five Best Ads in the Super Bowl, as Ranked by USA Today’s Ad Meter — Did the Best Ad of the Day Come in Second?

In an extraordinarily tight contest among Super Bowl ads, USA Today reports that the ad from Amazon for its Alexa came out just ahead of the NFL’s “Dirty Dancing”-themed ad to claim the top spot on the publication’s Ad Meter.

“‘Alexa Loses Her Voice’ topped the annual competition with an average rating of 7.1836 and ‘Touchdown Celebrations to Come’ finished at 7.1777,” the paper reports. The rating is out of a possible 10 points.

However, according to some media outlets, such as The New York Post, the “Touchdown” spot from the NFL was the better commercial. “Finally, something original and surprising,” Richard Kirshenbaum, the CEO of the ad agency NSG/SWAT, told The Post.

The “Touchdown” spot featured “New York Giants Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. doing a touchdown dance in a sendup of ‘Dirty Dancing,’” writes The Post.

After the “Alexa” and “Touchdown” spots, Ad Meter’s top five included Budweiser’s “Stand By You,” rating 6.8360; Doritos’ “Doritos Blaze va. Mountain Dew Ice,” rating 6.8167; and Toyota’s “Good Odds,” rating 6.7514. This was the 30th year USA Today rated Super Bowl commercials through its Ad Meter, which, the newspaper says, has thousands of participants.

    • Hi Andrew. FYI, the ‘Crocodile Dundee’ ad you link to was ranked number 13 in popularity on USA Today’s Super Bowl Ad Meter, which isn’t bad considering there were a total of 65 spots ranked. To see the ranking of all 65 Super Bowl commercials by Ad Meter, please click here.
