Veteran TV actor Tom Bosley, best known as Howard Cunningham, the dad on ABC’s "Happy Days," died early Tuesday morning at the age of 83, People magazine reported.

Bosley was hospitalized near his home in Palm Springs, where he had been battling lung cancer. He died of a staph infection, according to TMZ, which first reported his death.

After appearing for the entire 11-year run of "Happy Days," Bosley had another hit series, “The Father Dowling Mysteries," on CBS.

He also co-starred frequently with Angela Lansbury on her CBS show “Murder She Wrote.”

Henry Winkler, Bosley’s co-star on “Happy Days,” reacted to the news on KNX-1070 News Radio in L.A., saying: "I’m in shock, I really am. I spoke to him just a few weeks ago and he seemed to be getting his strength back."

Bosley is survived by his wife, Patricia, his brother Richard, his daughter Amy Baer, stepdaughters Kimberly diBonaventura and Jamie Van Meter and seven grandchildren.

  1. He didn’t died from a staph infection it was a long battle with lung correction. You should fix this reporting error. If you had received this information from TMZ’s original reporting they were wrong and printed without verifying their facts.
