CNN Pulls Plug on Prime-Time Program as Housecleaning Begins — Other Shows Also Reportedly Are Finished

CNN has taken a prime-time program off life support as the network implements staff cuts ordered by Turner Broadcasting. Deadline.com reports that the channel officially pulled the plug on “Crossfire,” which the story notes was already “missing in action for weeks.”

The “Crossfire” co-hosts, Newt Gingrich, Stephanie Cutter, S.E. Cupp and Van Jones, have already been showing up elsewhere on the network, the report notes, adding: “Some staff have been moved to other programs, and the remainder have been encouraged to apply for open positions within the bureau, source say — surprising, given that CNN is in the process of slashing about 300 positions.”

Another apparent casualty is “Sanjay Gupta MD,” which the report says is being phased out, with Gupta and his team shifting their focus to breaking news. “Ditto Elizabeth Cohen as the network’s medical unit is restructured — obviously it’s a hot beat right now,” the report adds.

“CNN Money with Christine Romans” is reportedly dead, although Romans continues as CNN’s chief business correspondent and anchor of “Early Start.” “Unguarded with Rachel Nichols” also is reportedly done.

“Crossfire,” which was a fixture on CNN from 1982 to 2005, was resurrected in fall 2013 but never caught on with viewers in its updated format.
