One of the iconic figures of broadcast news for more than three decades is said to be in talks with NBC News to join its upcoming newsmagazine “Rock Center with Brian Williams,” TVNewser reports.

Citing a Wall Street Journal report, TVNewser says veteran ABC anchorman Ted Koppel is negotiating to join a team of news pros that, besides Williams, includes Harry Smith, Meredith Vieira and Kate Snow. Koppel would be an occasional contributor to the show.

NBC is also reportedly contemplating airing "Rock Center" on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET, which is the slot currently occupied by "Parenthood."

Koppel anchored ABC’s “Nightline” from 1980 until retiring in 2005, and later worked as managing editor for Discovery Channel. More recently he has been a senior news analyst at National Public Radio and a contributing analyst for BBC World News America.
