Orson Welles’ Oscar for ‘Citizen Kane’ on the Auction Block

Dec 14, 2011  •  Post A Comment

The Academy Award statuette that was given to Orson Welles for writing the classic film "Citizen Kane" is being put up for auction, reports the AP.

Auctioneer Nate D. Sanders will sell the trophy to the highest bidder in an auction to be held Dec. 20.

The Motion Picture Academy frowns on selling Oscars, but it has only had a rule in place since 1950 that requires Oscar winners to promise not to sell the award before giving the Academy the chance to purchase it for $1. Welles’ Oscar for best original screenplay — an award he shared with Herman J. Mankiewicz — pre-dates the agreement.

Welles was also nominated for best actor and best director for “Citizen Kane,” which was released in 1941. His only other Academy Awards attention came in 1971, when he received an honorary award.

The famous actor-director-writer passed away in 1985 at the age of 70.
