The Directors Guild of America today announced the five nominees for best director of 2011 in motion pictures, and despite indications that Steven Spielberg would be one of the five — for either "War Horse" or "The Adventures of Tintin" — the filmmaker was snubbed, reports CBSNews.com.

The five nominees are: Woody Allen, "Midnight in Paris"; David Fincher, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"; Michel Hanavicius; "The Artist"; Alexander Payne, "The Descendants"; and Martin Scorsese, "Hugo."

In a release, Taylor Hackford, president of the DGA, said: "The directors nominated this year for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film Award have each demonstrated an inspired command of the medium. The fact that their prodigious talents have been recognized by their peers is the highest honor a director can achieve."

Other notable snubs included Terrence Malick for "The Tree of Life," Clint Eastwood for "J. Edgar," Nicolas Winding Refn for "Drive," Lars von Trier for "Melancholia" and Tomas Alfredson for "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."

The DGA will announce nominations in TV and documentary categories Tuesday.

The 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, in the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland.
