The first installment of PBS’s 10-hour documentary series of life aboard an aircraft carrier during the Iraq war premiered Sunday night, with the Navy allowing some unconventional and unflattering portraits of some of its personnel, the Los Angeles Times reports. The reality-style program is an anomaly for PBS, and the Navy is experimenting with a new openness, the newspaper says.

Some refreshing, apparently real moments last night on PBS.
Congratulations all around. What these hard working, proud sailors do for us everyday and night deserves honest reflections.
The Navy Hymn has real people and lives behind it.
This representation only adds to our appreciation of their dedication to Navy service and to our country.
God Bless them and The United States.
