CW Viability Threatened by Ratings Drop

May 16, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The viability of the CW network is questionable if ratings don’t rebound, the Wall Street Journal reports. Either CBS Corp. or Warner Bros., the partners behind the network, may withdraw their support if the situation doesn’t improve this year, according to an unnamed source close to the situation, the Journal says. The CW’s ratings have fallen 28% this season among 18-to-34-year olds and have dropped 22% during the sweeps period, the Journal says. CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves declined to comment to the Journal. Warner Bros. Television Group President Bruce Rosenblum is quoted as saying he was disappointed with the CW’s audience size but pointed to the strength of its distribution system and new-series development as positives.

  1. With the CW moving to a 5 night schedule, it IS sad that they have let their best performing program, WWE Smackdown, go to the competition and replaced it with the known “un-quantity” of Top Model repeats…I feel the end is near

  2. If the CW would focus more on the one work horse of series they do have, which is Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, and recognize that there is a much more powerful and larger audience to be had in the 25-50+ demographic are the mainstay audience of this show, they might stand a better chance of making a successful network for themselves.
Their ‘youth driven’ tactic is not only not working, it is failing them miserably as a network. All they have to do is take a look at what is successful on other networks and see that the majority of those successful shows have a cast over the age of 25 and have storylines that appeal to people over 25. Series like House, 24, Desperate Housewives, the numerous CSIs.
So I say they need to invest more in the older audience and most of all invest more into Supernatural which is, IMHO THE best show they have on their network right now. It has talented lead actors, quality writing and outstanding storytelling in both human drama and action/adventure.

  3. If the ratings continue to slip, The CW network will be disbanded!! Exactly what does this mean?!!
