Networks Cut Costs with Overseas Shows

May 19, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Networks are cutting costs by adapting television series from overseas instead of developing them in the U.S., the New York Times reports. At least six series introduced during last week’s upfronts were adapted from overseas while hit shows such as “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” were based on shows that first aired on foreign television, the newspaper says.

  1. I’m not so crazy on “stealing dieas” from “BBC”, “Ten”, “Seven”, and other foreign networks. The US had always been known for its originality. This could be seen in many “remakes” or reproductions of such shows as “The Golden Girls”, “Married… with Children” and “Desperate Housewives”. That’s been done for years. Then we started using “Global’s” original programming and then outsourcing jobs to Vancouver.
Why pay other countries for material we can easily sustain ourselves with, using full-time staffers, replacing overpaid and under working workers. Such is the case in Radio and its productions. Why can this not be done in TV?
Grabbing original content from other countries means the income goes to that outside country. NOT supporting US jobs and US innovation.
Lets also not become the country known for not excersizing our brains, more than what we are now.
Another point, utilizing content from other countries may also have “selfish image” implications. Something not one group had thought to bring up. With overseas issues and forcing our system and opinions on others, this is definitely a possibility. It’s already happening… just not talked about.
