AFTRA Vote May Leave SAG Sagging

Jul 9, 2008  •  Post A Comment

With 62% of AFTRA members voting to approve the union’s labor agreement with the studios, cousin actors union SAG may lose leverage in its own negotiations, Television Week reports. SAG has waged a public relations campaign to get its members who are also members of the American Federation of Television and Ratio Artists to vote against the package, which it said wasn’t strong enough on digital rights and other issues. On Tuesday, SAG was dealing with what two board members described as deepening internal dissent, according to the New York Times. Moderate members, including many top-earning actors, argued that the AFTRA vote meant it was time to knuckle under while more militant members wanted to fight on. SAG says it will respond to the “last” offer from the studios Thursday.
