Morning Host Basted for Talking BBQ

Jul 30, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Jed Mescon, host of the morning show on WRCB-TV, Chattanooga, has been suspended for promoting a barbecue event sponsored by a local Kiwanis club on air, the Chattanoogan reports. The station’s new news director had told on-air talent to focus on the news, and the brief mention of the barbecue drew a day off without pay for Mescon.

  1. I don’t see what the big deal is about this. Local TV anchors mention community events all the time and tell people “you might want to check this out”. That’s even more true on morning shows, where it’s like you’re having a cup of coffee with your anchorperson.
This to me is not a suspendable offenbse, especially without pay.
Sounds to me like the station managers have an agenda to go after this guy and are looking for any excuse, maybe on account of falling ratings.
Tell Jed to apply for a job at WCCO or KSTP or KARE here in Minnesota-I bet he’d be welcome, whenever they have an opening.

  2. I agree; there has to be some hidden meaning behind this surprising action on management’s part. Maybe the management is anti Kiwanis? Hard to see any justification for their action.

  3. I think it is so wrong for the news manager, Tolan, I think his name is. I really don’t believe he deserves the Mister in front of his name. To suspend Jed is very wrong. Jed has been a wonderful person to the Chattanooga area, also a great person to encourage the school students in this area. Jed is always there, with his heart and hands reaching out to help anyone that needs it. I think that fellow that suspended Jed should really be the one suspended, well not suspended, but FIRED,,, before he does any more damage to the station. Without Jed and the freedom for the other news team members to be able to be as they always have is so wrong in what Tolan has done. Tutti Harris, Chattanooga
