With the launch of the fall broadcast shows nearly done, ratings have been lackluster at best with few success stories, Daily Variety reports. Network executives blame aftereffects of the Writers Guild of America strike and the growing impact of digital video recorders for their mostly mediocre showing. An exception has been CBS, whose returning shows and newcomer “The Mentalist” are off to impressive starts, the trade paper says.
