House Energy & Commerce Chairman Challenged

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., is challenging colleague John Dingell, D-Mich., for the House Energy & Commerce Committee chairmanship, Broadcasting & Cable reports. In a letter on his Web site announcing his challenge for the position, Waxman said, “We will need the very best leadership in Congress and our committees to succeed.” According to the publication, given Dingell’s long tenure as a member of the House, the congressman has cozy relationships with broadcasters. Waxman’s relationship with broadcasting is anything but, having previously made efforts to increase regulations on over-the-counter drug advertising and expressing concern about product placement.
