When the San Diego Chargers play the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 4, the game will be broadcast in 3-D to viewers in theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Boston, the Wall Street Journal reports. The league is laying the groundwork for what could be the next big advance in TV technology. “We want to demonstrate this and let people get excited about it and see what the future holds,” NFL senior VP of broadcasting and media operations Howard Katz tells the paper.

  1. 3ality Digital is delighted to be partnering with the NFL for this broadcast. We’ll be employing our pixel-perfect 3D technologies to both shoot and power transmission of the game in real time. There will also be 3D-enabled HD televisions in all the theatres, so viewers will get a taste of what they’ll be able to see in the home in the near future. Sports in 3D is going to knock your socks off, to turn a phrase.
