Firings Precede Carols at WNBC

NBC’s flagship station in New York was about to shoot its annual Chirstmas Caroling promo at the Rockefeller Center skating rink last week as the network’s parent began a round of layoffs, the New York Observer reports. Several staffers never made it to the shoot for the station, which was already in upheaval over plans to turn it into a content center, the paper says.

  1. Heaven forbid, the station leaves the top 10 markets list. It could be sold to a rival network or group owner…like here in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale TV market. NBC6 is to be sold to Post-Newsweek Stations group pending FCC approval, because the market is not in the top ten(#14, if I recall). NBC Universal is only keeping its Telemundo station, WSCV, Ch. 51.

  2. Maybe NBC should kill two birds with one stone, and make a reality show about the firings at one of it’s stations. It could be called “Station Survivor”. The winner gets to be top anchor, sportscaster, senior broadcast engineer, sales director, and night cleaning woman all at once. Hey, at least they have a job. Old episodes could be repurposed onto Bravo…
