Washington’s CBS affiliate WUSA-TV will replace traditional news crews with individuals who both report and shoot stories, the Washington Post says. While the change comes at a time when stations are looking to cut costs, general manager Allan Horlick says there’s more to the move. “We believe strongly that [this change] will raise both the quality and quantity of the product we’re putting out” on TV and on the Internet, Horlick tells the paper. “The concept of a multimedia journalist, having his own beat, with an area of expertise, and a limitless virtual news desk is something we can get very excited about.”

The reason/excuse Horlick gives is as convoluted and false an answer as I have ever heard. There is only one reason for this change…because they can. They, along with virtually every other TV station have been looking for ways to get rid of unions for a long time. The current financial situation provides the perfect cover.
