Is Madden Fumbling Facts?

Jan 30, 2009  •  Post A Comment

The Wall Street Journal says that John Madden, pro football’s pre-eminent television analyst, has been making some statements that don’t always jibe with the facts. Mr. Madden, who will work the Super Bowl Sunday, is supported by his boss, NBC Universal Sports chairman Dick Ebersol, who didn’t hire the ex-coach for his memory of statistics. “I want my analysts to be talking about what they viscerally see,” Mr. Ebersol tells the Journal.

  1. The real fact is, sports broadcasts would be a lot more enjoyable without John Madden or Dick Vitale or Stephen A. Smith or countless others who rely on their same old tired shtick.

  2. Pietro is right – whenever I watch a Pro football game, which is rarely, I mute the sound. The yammering that accompanies the game is inane, irrelevant and irritating. Mr. Madden should retire and write a football book no one will bother to read – as an entertainer, his day has, sadly, passed.

  3. These comments are insane. Any true football fan will tell you that John Madden is a national treasure. He’s hands down the best analyst in the game. Football’s continuing growth can be attributed to Coach Madden’s ability to speak directly to the viewer. He truly enhances the game of football.

  4. Eric,
I assure you that I am a TRUE FOOTBALL fan. I am NOT, NOT however, a fan of Mr. Madden. He sold out the NFLPA, and he makes money off the backs of those that make him look good. He is POMPOUS and self righteous. NBC pays him and robs those that make him look good. Please, good sir. If you don’t know what you are talking about, just shut up. I suspect you read this newsletter but don’t work in Television. If that is, in fact the case…Please excuse yourself from the discussion. Thank you.

  5. Hey, Bill, CAPITALIZING certain WORDS in your argument, doesn’t make it any STRONGER.
Lots of fans like John Madden, I have certainly enjoyed his animated commentary, over the years, all of the “booms”, etc. included. One would think that the reason he has stuck around, for so long, is because many out there, indeed, like his presence on the telecast.

  6. You make blogging look like a walk in the park! I’ve been trying to blog daily but I just cant find writing material.. you’re an inspiration to me and i’m sure many others!
