NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams cites the economic downturn as a primary reason for the show’s improved ratings, adding that the show does particularly well in hard-hit cities such as St. Louis and Detroit, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Williams also called the Alex Rodriguez steroids story “bizarre” and said strong competition at CBS from former NBC colleague Katie Couric was good for the broadcasting industry, B&C says.
