Top Court Backs FCC on Expletives

In a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court upheld the Federal Communications Commission’s policy that television stations can be fined if they broadcast “fleeting expletives,” TelevisionWeek reports. First Amendment issues were not addressed by the court in the case, which stems from Cher and Nicole Richie uttering the f-word live during Fox broadcasts of the Billboard Music Awards in 2002 and 2003, TVWeek says.
