Sorry, Kara, You’re Not ‘Posh’ Enough: ‘Idol’ Creator Reportedly Looking to Replace Abdul with Spice Girl

Aug 6, 2009  •  Post A Comment

‘American Idol’ creator Simon Fuller wants Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham to replace the departing Paula Abdul as a judge on the show, according to a report in the U.K. newspaper The Sun.

If true, Fuller could likely pull it off. Not only was he the manager of the Spice Girls during their prime, he introduced "Posh Spice" to the man she married, soccer player and international celebrity David Beckham. Furthermore, Fuller is said to be a close friend and business advisor to the couple.

The Sun claims an unnamed source told the paper, "[I]dol needs a big star. Simon Cowell and Victoria have always got on. It would be an incredible coup to get Posh. She was in one of the biggest girl groups in history so she knows what she is talking about. Simon Fuller is now speaking to her."

The hiring of someone to replace Abdul would be an indication that management does not think judge Kara DioGuardi–who will return to the show for her second season this fall–has the fire power to keep viewers from defecting from ‘Idol’ in the wake of Adbul’s departure.

UPDATE: Some hours after we first published this, Fox did indeed announce that it has hired Victoria Beckham–and Katy Perry–as "guest" judges. Click here for that item.

  1. It seems Fuller had a plan to replace Paula all along.. Now we know why Paula didn’t cave in..
I think Idol is about to Jump The Shark..

  2. I have to agree. Either this is a big publicity stunt created to boost Idol’s ratings, or it is bound to hurt their ratings. Paula’s value on A.I. should not be underestimated.

  3. If Fuller thinks the Spice Girls had anywhere near the impact on the charts that Paula Abdul did he’s smoking something.
    What’s 1/5 of not much?
