A Feisty ABC Growled Wednesday Night: Ratings of ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Cougar Town’ Beat Expectations

The overnights from Wednesday show that ABC’s new show, "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town" started strong and were more than competitive with the other nets, reports TVbythenumbers.com.

CBS’s "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "Gary Unmarried" had good opening numbers at 8 p.m., and "Criminal Minds" dominated at 9 pm, though it only tied in 18-49 year olds with the ABC shows. CBS won the night in both 18-49-year-olds and total viewers.

NBC’s new "Mercy" was third, and even the reliable "Law and Order: SVU" was off, coming in fourth in the 18-49 demo for the 9 o’clock hour.
