CBS Wins Friday in the Ratings; ABC Impresses With Reruns of New Shows; ‘Dollhouse’ Continues to Struggle on Fox

CBS won Friday night both in the 18-49-year old demo and total viewers. ABC, with reruns of three shows shown earlier in the week, "Modern Family," "Cougar Town" and "FlashForward," along with the season premiere of "20/20," came in second in 18-49-year-olds, but third in overall viewers.

NBC’s lineup of the 20th (!) season premiere of "Law & Order," "Dateline" (with a big Michael Jackson hook), and "The Jay Leno Show" was good for second in overall viewers, but only third in 18-to-49-year-olds.

Fox struggled with the season premieres of "Dollhouse" and "Brothers," as did the CW with the season premiere of "Smallville" and a repeat of "America’s Next Top Model." Fox came in fourth for the night in both 18-to49-year-olds and total viewers, and the CW came in last in both categories.

  1. There were enough fall shows to sample, and one could see which hold promise, and others which deserved to be canceled. ABC’s new comedy ’Modern Family’ will most likely be cancelled. Its premise is week and the actors seemed to be calling their lines in. The Jay Leno show seems a little ’juttery’, but given time, it will improve, however, The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien definitely needs to light a fire cracker under its writers. Cougar Town looks very promising as a sitcom series. The Cleveland Show looks good for a good run, but some of the supporting characters need work. Also, the show’s producers need to drop the narcissistic opening and come up with something better. Accidentally On Purpose should fall between the cracks accidentally on purpose – the show seems to lack any potential. Jenna Elfman needs to pick her vehicles better – Dharma had a stronger story premise, ’Accidentally’ should go back into a closet and nailed shut! Jenna has a great deal of talent, this show is a waste of it. And so the new fall season begins…
