Katie Couric Says She’s Staying at CBS News Through End of Her Contract

Katie Couric told the New York Times that, despite her newscast’s low ratings and all of last year’s speculation that she was on the way out, she will remain as the anchor of the “CBS Evening News” until her contract expires in 2011.

She told the Times in the interview, “I think reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.”

She’s also adding to her duties. The Times said CBS will announce today that Couric will showcase her interviewing skills as host of a weekly one-on-one interview webcast starting tomorrow on CBSNews.com.

  1. Katie’s a joke. She’s so full of herself that she has no idea she’s a lightweight. Her’ “cute” and “friendly” act doesn’t play on evening news. She belongs on morning programs where the little kids play. She’ should stay put. She’s not worth the $ they pay her. So, why not stay in a job she is under-qualified for if they are stupid enough to pay her. I will continue to ignore CBS until they replace her. I like grown-ups reading my news.

  2. Donna, you must have some very personal issues to write such a scathing indictment against Katie. As a woman, one would think that you would support Katie especially since it is quite difficult to compete ratings wise against a man at 6:30PM. Katie is as good as any of the news broadcasters, and I am sure that CBS recognizes that changing would not influence the ratings to any worthwhile degree. I think she should be more visable and I like the interviewing idea for her to get out there more. Donna, maybe you will earn the big bucks one day if you have the talent.

  3. Katie is a lightweight and has been a real anchor around the neck of CBS News. It has nothing to do with being a woman. She’s just not the right woman to anchor the news.

  4. In the history of the Anchor, strong serious men have pushed the perception that they represent the urgency of the news. Cronkite, Brinkley, Smith, Mudd, Brokaw, Rather, Chancellor, Williams, Jennings and Reynolds. When you saw them on the Television, something of urgency was happening and they had the authority to bring it to you. Katie, although a competent reporter, does not project that persona. She is so associated with lighter fare that it’s hard to absorb the notion of a hard story coming from her. Hell, even Chung and Sawyer had (and has) more Gravitas with the viewing audience. Having been conditioned in that fashion, America will take baby steps in making her newscast the definitive place to go when something goes down. It’s just the way it is.
