‘Survivor’ Host Probst Thinks ‘Amazing Race’ Should Withdraw From Emmy Competition

Sep 21, 2009  •  Post A Comment

After winning his second Emmy as the host of CBS’ "Survivor," Jeff Probst was asked about "The Amazing Race" winning its seventh straight Emmy as outstanding reality competition series, the Los Angeles Times reports. Probst suggested the CBS show stop entering the Emmy competition.

"Maybe ‘Amazing Race’ should do what Oprah did and pull itself out of competition," said Probst, whose own show has yet to beat "The Amazing Race."

  1. Maybe Probst should just admit that his show is pretty lame when compared to Amazing Race.

  2. In the last cycle of Amazing Race the producers came very close to being guilty of fixing the game for the winners. They had several legs take place in China and one challenge involved speaking Chinese, which the winning team was fluent in. The show did not deserve to win the Emmy.

  3. I sort of agree with you John. I’m not sure if I think Survivor is lame but I don’t think pulling the winner in order to lower the bar will make Survivor any better. I guess according to Probst’s thinking, Usain Bolt should be taken out of all 100 and 200 meter races. Certainly Michael Phelps should be banned from swimming competitions.

  4. you’re missing the point. it was a reference to Oprah being so good that AR should just pull out. Man, people get it together. It was a compliment.

  5. Actually… what everyone needs to realize is that the bulk of the voting TV academy members are old.. and most members don’t even watch the nomination tapes they are sent.
The result… the Emmys are an older-skewed and politically based popularity contest. Amazing Race… 7 years in a row? Really? The math doesn’t add up.

  6. I don’t think hosting a reality show should be an Emmy category. nothing against Probst, but come on. (I’m actually glad for Jeff, but Tom Bergeron is a WAY better host!)

  7. Most members don’t watch the tapes—and YOU know this for a fact because—-

  8. I think Jeff was joking.
On another note, having watched some of Amazing Race being filmed, everything is not as it seems. At times, while teams appear to be at one location, they are all then moved in mass to another while making us think they are at the original location. We saw this happen several times while they were filming on Kauai.
Arriving on Kauai at one airport, but then running to get their cars, they were at another airport 20 miles away. Another time, zipping into a waterfall pool, the spot they got out of the pool was impossible to get to without being driven there.
I wonder how much more of that show is not as it seems?

  9. They really don’t watch the tapes. I work at a network and we just vote down the line for things from our own network and studio. I don’t know any exec that actually watches a tape before voting.

  10. OK, I know I replied to Jim yet it posted as a reply to someone else. Trying again:

  11. If Survivor were to win, having taken Amazing Race out of the running, it will still be a tainted victory because you could never say that Survivor truly beat out Amazing Race.
