NBC Drama’s Second Season Canceled Before It’s Even out of the Gate

Oct 9, 2009  •  Post A Comment

An NBC drama has had its second season canceled even before it premiered, Variety reports.

The network didn’t say why it was canceling the John Wells cop series “Southland”, which was to have aired Fridays at 9 p.m. starting Oct. 23. But insiders said its dark tone was better suited to a 10 p.m. hour, which NBC no longer has because of its Jay Leno talk show.

Newsmagazine “Dateline” will air in the slot instead, leaving the network with another time slot without scripted programming

  1. Once again NBC (dba as the nobody conscious network) has missed the boat. The network cancels one of its best scripted shows. Surely it has divested itself of any illusions that “The Jay Leno Show” will move from its current position. I am still amazed that NBC is providing salary payments to people who come up with such poor programming decisions.
NBC appears content to languish in the ratings basement for all eternity.

  2. So true!! I could understand if they were scheduling Leno for once a week but 5 days a week? They are making it easy for people to not factor NBC shows into their evening plans!!!!

  3. Its not “dark”,,,, its expensive! All NBC cares about now is $$ and cents. Quality scripted programming be damned.
Another good show bites the dust.

  4. Looks like they are doing everything possible to make sure they secure their place as a low rated network. Good job NBC!

  5. In my opinion, Jay Leno is a great comedian but he and his team need time to get the writing excellent and thus once a week would be better scheduling.
For brilliant programming try MI5 on BBC or even a drama on CBC. These channels are both heavily financed by their governments and thus attract outstanding
    production teams.

  7. Despite “American Idol” goes head-to-head with “The Biggest Loser” on Tuesday Nights.
Therefore, I think “The Biggest Loser” could move to Friday Nights so that they could have better ratings?
