Comcast Planning to Sell NBC Network and NBC’s TV Stations?

Nov 2, 2009  •  Post A Comment

If, as expected, Comcast buys a majority stake of NBC Universal, will the cable giant sell the NBC network and the NBC TV stations?

According to Claire Atkinson at B&C, that answer may be yes, and those discussions may have already begun. Here’s what Atkinson writes, "One Wall Street player confirmed market rumors that bankers have already descended on the MSO’s Philadelphia headquarters to work with management on selling the NBC Network and stations to a third party. Comcast had no immediate comment on that still-hypothetical possibility."

  1. Lets see, we have GE selling a 51% stake of NBC to Comcast in the works. Meanwhile rumor already is circling that Comcast then will turn around selling NBC and its ‘O&O’ stations to a third party. News Corp sharks are said to be interested in picking up NBC. Well, I guess it’s a good time for GE to sell NBC, then again for Viviandi to get out as well, especially since it only has a 20% stake in NBCU. One wonders if News Corp is primarily interested in getting control of Universal Pictures. Could be? However, I wonder if both Comcast and News Corp might get in a little hot water since News Corp already owns not only the FOX Network, but a pretty full stable of ‘O&O’ Fox Stations. Granted, I feel Fox getting control of NBC remains questionable at best. GE has never had a golden touch when programming NBC prime-time, nor has it really been a leader in news – save its own promotions. Late night has done well for NBC, but the move to put Conan in at 11:30PM has not worked out that well. NBC meanwhile killed itself on cheap ’reality’ overload, and Leno’s 10PM show five days a week looks like a desperate ’Hail Mary’ play – obviously an economy move for a network that has very few programs of rating note. Could this be the death of NBC as we know it? …Stay tuned!

  2. That whirring noise you hear emanating from the direction of Valhalla, NY is General David Sarnoff spinning in his mausoleum…

  3. NBC was hacked by GE when they took over. The late, wonderful Brandon Tartikoff did eveything he could and well, let’s not go there.
Now Comcast, the cable idiots may buy the Peacock…they’re hard pressed to keep a clean signal on their wires, much less know how to develope original content…as referenced above, poor General Sarnoff is spinning in his grave and foaming at the mouth.
The bumbling, money grabbing, greed monster nit-wits who have stolen our media are like drunks in a walk-in liquor cabinet at 3am…The “Brains” at Clear Channel in radio owning 6-8 stations in any given market, hundreds across our nation…the roosters are in the Hen House and we have let them go wild…We need to re-regulate broadcasting, our banks, our airlines,…Wake up America! Wake-the-f*** UP!
NBC owned by Comcast? That’s a Tragedy.

  4. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
