Sting Blasts Simon Cowell’s ‘X-Factor’ Show (a Version of Which Will Likely Come to the U.S. Eventually)

Pop superstar Sting has blasted the Simon Cowell show "X Factor," which is a big hit in the U.K. The show is somewhat similar to "American Idol," though groups can also compete.

Sting called the show "preposterous" and "appalling," according to Reuters’ Fan Fare.

Furthermore, Sting said "I am sorry but none of those kids are going to go anywhere, and I say that sadly,” he said of the contestants. “They are humiliated when they get sent off. How appalling for a young person to feel that rejection. It is a soap opera which has nothing to do with music. In fact, it has put music back decades. Television is very cynical."

Fan Fare said Sting made his remarks in an interview in the U.K. publication Evening Standard. An American version of the show is reportedly in the works.

  1. Has Sting never heard of Leona Lewis???

  2. Is that where she came from? I’ve often wondered.
Well, asking Sting anything about anything other than Sting is pointless. In terms of things he find essential, his ego looms large.

  3. Who’s Leona Lewis?

  4. He’s absolutely right. All of these reality shows are soap operas which audiences can’t get enough of. Idol is huge due in large part to the audience wanting to see Simon rip people new ones. Can’t argue what works – Idol is the biggest show season after season, but you can’t help but feel horrible when you see someone’s dreams crushed.

  5. Sting is right. Leona will be gone in a few years. Leona loves the lifestyle like all the other winners, won’t be here the long distance.

  6. Can you name anyone else from the 100’s of thousands over the years that actually made it? Case closed. xfactor is a joke – and no longer a pop singing competition.

  7. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
