Report: FCC Chairman Brings in ‘Broadcast Hitman’

Dec 11, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski has brought in an advisor on spectrum and First Amendment issues, reports Harry Jessell at TVNewsCheck.com.

Stuart Benjamin, a Duke law professor on sabbatical, will serve as as a "distinguished scholar in residence" at the Commission.

Benjamin is expected to help the FCC in its quest to strip away broadcasters’ spectrum and auction it off to wireless broadband operators, Jessel says, citing, the professor’s essay "Roasting the Pig to Burn Down the House: A Modest Proposal," which Duke published last May.

In it, Benjamin argues that broadcasting is an inefficient use of spectrum and that taking it back and auctioning it would generate "hundreds of billions of dollars" for the government and put it to better use.

  1. it would generate “hundreds of billions of dollars” for the government and put it to better use.
What would the benefit be for the government to get billions of dollars?

  2. The benefit WOULD be that it these extra funds could be used to slow down the fast-growing deficit. But like sailors on leave, money stays in Congress only long enough for them to make it grubby and corrupt.

  3. Way to focus and straight to your point, i love it. Keep up the work people. Dont let anyone stop us bloggers.
