Nike Chairman Phil Knight: Tiger’s ‘Indiscretions’ Are a ‘Minor Blip’

Dec 15, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Nike chairman and co-founder Phil Knight says that when Tiger Woods’ career is over "you’ll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip," according to an interview Knight did with Tripp Mickle of the SportsBusiness Journal.

Woods is the key endorser of Nike’s golf line.

When asked about the the Woods scandal and if it changes "the concept of building brands arounds athletes," Knight responded, "Not for us. It’s part of the game."

So far the only sponsor who has said it has dropped Woods completely because of the scandal is Accenture. To read TVWeek Open Mic blogger Chuck Ross’s comments about situation, click here.

  1. Let me get this straight, screwing around on your spouse is “part of the game”. What a DICK!!!! This is not just one affair, that may be considered a “blip”. This is a pig who whored around with skank. This reflects on his moral grounding, or lack of. Why don’t men get this. Instead they are envying him, patting him on the back, and helping him set up his tramp meetings. Hope someone is being checked for STDs.Guess what Knight, a lot of women used to by Nike too. You better shut your mouth until you can say something marginally intelligent

  2. I never thought I’d call Phil Knight a moron but now I will. You totally nailed it Sharon. One indiscretion can be called an oops…12 plus is called a pig.

  3. I think Mr. Knight misses the point. The comment he makes about a “minor blip” will come back to hurt him. I am not so concerned about what Tiger may have done – however stupid. I am hugely concerned that a CEO would refer to Tiger’s lack of judgment, character and integrity as so insignificant that no one will care in a few years. There are men and women in this country who value honesty…we acknowledge mistakes. But to take such a dismissive attitude loses my vote for Nike. We won’t be buying their products anymore. I don’t have an opinion as to whether they should have dropped their sponsorship – but it is clear that Nike fosters the attitude that sports alone matters – and character…not at all.

  4. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  5. I agree with your thoughts here and I really love your blog! I’ve bookmarked it so that I can come back & read more in the future.
