Leno Leaving Prime Time After Feb. 11

Jay Leno’s last 10 pm. prime time show will be on Feb. 11, Jeff Gaspin, the chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, said Sunday, but the network still doesn’t know where he’ll end up, The New York Times reports.

Gaspin, speaking at press tour, told reporters that the network would like to push back Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight” show a half hour, to 12:05 a.m. so Leno could do a shortened 11:35 p.m. show. Talks with O’Brien and the others about the proposal will continue this week, he said, noting, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that “My goal right now is to keep Jay, Conan and Jimmy as part of our late-night lineup. As much as I’d like to tell you we have a done deal, we know that’s not true.”

The Associated Press reported that some affiliates notified the network last month that they would go public with their complaints or even bump the show if a change wasn’t made. Gaspin said about one-third of NBC’s affiliates had been hurt by the lower ratings for Leno’s show.

The Times reported that NBC expects to schedule two hours of scripted programs, a reality show, some “Dateline” newsmagazines and reruns in the 10 p.m. hours after the Winter Olympics.

  1. I AM SO DONE WITH ANYTHING NBC HAVE IT ALL BLOCKED FROM ALL MY TV’S HOME AND AT WORK@!!

  2. Moving Jay to 10PM was a dumb-ass move long before it ever got on paper, much less on-air.
If heads aren’t rolling at 30 Rock, then their problems are even deeper.
I don’t see a thirty minute JAY working and I don’t see Conan’s people laying down and taking the later start.
My guess, somebody will quit and the Peacock will be writing some hefty checks, (just what the old bird’s coffers need, another preening).
Oh, well, all’s fair in rock ‘n roll AND TV.
Stick around, this story has more pages to it.

  3. My theory on the whole “Put Leno on at ten” is this: it was a ploy to try to keep Leno happy. Remember years back, when Leno was the king of late night talk shows? When, at that very time, NBC announced they wanted to replace him with Conan because he fit the perceived younger target demo? It seemed then that Leno heard it the same time we all did. Talk about kicking the golden goose!
Once NBC executives succeeded in showing us that they’re even dumber than we give them credit for, they threw Leno the 10pm slot bone – probably knowing it wouldn’t succeed. All to appease a guy they shouldn’t have kicked in the first place.
But I thank NBC for providing us with ample column lines of their idiocy. That’s Entertainment, baby!
