‘People of Earth’ Largely Support Conan

Jan 13, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Conan O’Brien’s open letter to “People of Earth” explaining why he won’t continue on if NBC moves his “Tonight Show” to a 12:05 a.m. start time evoked support for the host among online commentators, The New York Times reports.

The Times said commenters were largely supportive of the comedian’s statement in the midst of a difficult situation, and many held rival Jay Leno responsible for the NBC scheduling problems.

  1. Why is Leno being held responsible for anything? Granted, he shouldn’t have agreed to a 10pm prime show, but NBC is the orchestrator of this debacle. NBC should be held responsible for 90 percent of this mess. Jay and Conan are largely victims. Jay shouldn’t have agreed to step down, Conan shouldn’t have pushed for “The Tonight Show” (its format and tone is completely antithetical to his own brand of humor) and NBC shouldn’t keep trying to have their cake and eat it to.

  2. I’m glad Conan is getting more support. He should. It’s not his fault Jay Leno signed a paper all those years ago to leave the show and it’s not his fault that the NBC brass screwed up and, as T. Moss says above, are now trying to have their cake and eat it too. I heard a great comment this morning…It’s like a guy has two girlfriends and he says he wants to keep them both. Sorry, bud. You have to make a choice. Jay had his run. Conan hasn’t even had a chance to grow with the show. Does anybody remember that Jay wasn’t doing that well against Letterman at first. NBC should admit they screwed up the 10:00 pm slot idea, Conan should be allowed to continue and Jay should put together a show about Cars and Motorcycles and head for cable.

  3. What I don’t understand is why NBC is keeping the Jay Leno Show at all. Whenever any other show bombs in the ratings, it gets cancelled. Why should this situation be treated any other way?

  4. Conan is brilliant. The quickest wit in the business. Leno is the worst interviewer that The Tonight Show has seen. “Really…” is typically all he has to say to a guest’s story. I’ve even seen Jim Carrey look boring on his show. I don’t understand why the American public is so in love with him. He’s a nice guy, but not cut out for anything unscripted. I’ll follow Conan wherever he goes, but I hope it’s in New York. I liked the edgier atmosphere his show had there. Too bad for his family, being uprooted twice.

  5. I would like to start my own blog one day. This was a really nice blog that you made here. Keep up the success 😛
