Senator Feingold Pens Pointed Letter to NBCU, Comcast

Feb 18, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Democratic Senator Russ Feingold has penned a letter filled with tough questions for Comcast and NBC Universal, following a Capitol Hill hearing two weeks ago with NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker and Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts regarding a proposed merger, B&C reports.

The letter asks both companies if they are willing to divest their Internet TV interest, tie cable rate hikes with the rise of inflation and cease the practice of bundling channels.

"Mr. Zucker and Mr. Roberts," Feingold wrote, "it is common practice now to require a television distributor like a rival cable company to carry several less popular cable channels in order to get a cable channel that they and consumers really want. Would you be willing to stop this practice and agree to offer fair rates for individual channels?"

Despite the protests by Sen. Feingold and Minnesota Sen. Al Franken, the merger is likely to get government approval. What is unknown is the conditions that may be placed on Comcast by the FCC.

  1. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
