‘Idol’ Reclaims Top Ratings Spot, Trouncing Olympics Coverage

Recovering from a rare second place finish last Wednesday, Fox’s "American Idol" returned to form by taking first place in the Tuesday night ratings, according to TVbythenumbers.com.

"Idol" posted an 8.9 rating in the 18-49 year old demographic yesterday, off 2% from last week. Year-to-year, "Idol" is down around 7% in the same demo.

Despite the slip, "Idol" completely overtook NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage, which posted a 5.0 rating in the 18-49 demo when it went head-to-head with "Idol." NBC averaged a 5.4 rating for the night.

Compared to this time in 2006 during the Torino Winter Games in 2006, the Vancouver Olympics are ahead in ratings (6.9/19 vs. 6.4/16 in adults 18-49) and total viewers (25.2 vs. 21.0 Mil).

Meanwhile, ABC’s "Lost" gained 2% from last week to post a 4.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, while "The Forgotten" held steady at a 1.7 rating.
