Cisco Says Announcement Tomorrow—Tuesday, March 9th—’Will Forever Change the Internet’

Cisco Systems, whose clients include Comcast and AT&T, is planning a Webcast  tomorrow, Tuesday, March 9th, that it says "will forever change the Internet and its impact on consumers, businesses and governments," according to eWeek.com.

According to the report, Cisco is "getting ready to unveil a plan to work with [Internet ]service providers to build ultrafast broadband networks that could run at 1G bps."

As the report also notes, the Federal Communications Commission, on March 17, "is scheduled to release its National Broadband Plan laying out how to bring affordable broadband to most of the more than 93 million Americans who don’t have such access….The FCC is pushing ahead with its goal of building networks with speeds of 100M bps for 100 million homes by 2020, an expectation that is sure to raise the pressure on current service providers to ramp up the speed of their networks."

eWeek says the story was first reported in other news organizations, including Reuters and the Financial TImes.

Google has also announced it’s working on building several ultrafast networks itself. The article says the difference between what Google and Cisco plan to do is that Google will compete with current Internet service providers, while Cisco will work with them.

  1. Good luck with AT&T on those high speeds. Its commitment to using its existing copper lines from a fiber node will keep it trapped at 50 Mbps, if that much.
