One of the groundbreaking shows that aired on PBS looks like it’s going to be the basis of a fictional film on HBO, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The PBS program was “An American Family,” from documentary filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond, which followed the Loud family. The series shocked some in America when the parents’ marital problems led to Pat Loud asking her husband for a divorce partway through the series; son Lance also came out as gay.

Now HBO and producer Gavin Polone are making “Cinema Verite,” a film that looks behind the scenes at the family and the making of the series. David Seltzer (“The Omen”) is writing; Shari Springer Berman and Bob Pulcini ("American Splendor") will direct.

The Raymonds will consult.

HBO previously turned another groundbreaking documentary of the era, Albert and David Maysles’ “Grey Gardens” into an Emmy-winning fictional film.
