Nintento has announced it will come out with a 3D version of its popular DS portable gaming device. Furthermore, the company says the device, set to debut sometime before March, 2011, will not need users to wear glasses to get the 3D effect.

Information Week says that  "The DS, released in 2004, is the best-selling portable gaming device ever. As of the end of December 2009, Nintendo has sold 125 million units. By comparison, Sony has sold about 60 million units of the PlayStation Portable, which was released the same time as the DS. "

Furthermore, Information Week says, "Nintendo is apparently hoping the 3DS will help rejuvenate sales of the DS brand, which is slowing. In the current fiscal year ending March 31, Nintendo expects to sell 30 million units, down from 31.2 million units in the previous fiscal year."

Separtately, Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller told IGN  (according to CNET), "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it’s an interesting move but one I’d like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint," Koller said…adding, "8- and 9-year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."

Furthermore, according to the CNET story, "For its part, Sony believes that the future in 3D is in the console. Koller said Sony intends to invest in 3D gaming for its PlayStation 3. A firmware update bringing 3D gaming to the PS3 is coming at some point in the future."
