Politicians Join ABC-Cablevision Retrans Dispute; Senator Says ABC Should Not Be Able to Pull Signal; Representative Wants FCC to Stay Out of the Debate

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) weighed in on ABC’s threat to pull the WABC-TV signal from Cablevision’s New York-area systems on Sunday if Cablevision doesn’t up the retransmission consent fees it’s willing to pay, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The Senator told FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski that the broadcaster shouldn’t be allowed to yank its signal, unless the cable operator is negotiating in bad faith. Congressman Joe Barton (R-Texas) weighed in, as well, in his own letter in which he said that the government should stay out of the fight.

  1. Boycott ABC Advertisers, show ABC who has the real power here….WE DO! Cablevision already pays $200 million for ABC programming, and now ABS has the balls to demand a 20% in this economy? Boycott ABC Advertisers and cut them off at their knees.

  3. Your comments point to a single focus and bias view from a Cablevisions perspective. ABC creates finances and assumes all the risk with their programming. Why should Cablevision profit from the basic fees without compensating those companies providing the means for their profitable business model without additional compensation. The fees in question go beyond the agreement already in place between the two companies and covers their premium programming such as Disney and other programs, which by the way also profits Cablevision through their premium channel fees. So before you play the uninformed (or possibly informed and creating controversy) card please look at all the facts. We are all involved in activities including our daily jobs to earn money, why should Cablevision deny ABC of this fundamental business needs.

  4. abc advertisers should pull out until this is settled. 3 million less people are watching the ads

  5. Boycott the following Academy Award sponsors to send a message to ABC and Cablevision: Hyundai, Mercedes Benz; and Mastercard pushing their new “paypass.” Roger Iger, Walt Disney’s ABC’s chief executive, took a paycut of 58 percent down to a $21.6 million annual salary (Think of how much he “earned” before the paycut!). Jim Dolan, CEO Cablevision, has annual compensation of 1.75 million. They have no respect whatsoever for the average American hard working consumer. BOYCOTT the Academy Award advertisers. Send a message.

  6. I’m angry that the CONSUMER has to pay again!!! I say BOYCOTT ABC!!!!! And Switch from CABLEVISION!!!! This will teach them and others that they must think of the CONSUMER FIRST!!!!

  7. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
