Andy Richter on Leno Saying He Didn’t Have a Choice To Leave NBC and Not Take Back ‘Tonight Show’: ‘Multimillionaires are always being forced to do things they don’t want to do.’ Ouch!

Conan O’Brien’s ‘Tonight Show’ announcer, Andy Richter, made his first television appearance after leaving "The Tonight Show" last month by filling in for Regis Philbin today on "Live with Regis and Kelly," The Wrap reports.

O’Brien is legally bound from talking on television about his departure from NBC, but Richter isn’t.

Commenting about Jay Leno, Richter said he was frustrated to see Leno offer heaps of support six years ago, only to turn around years later.

"It’s very frustranting when someone says… ‘I’m going to hand this over… and then doesn’t,’ Richter said.

Later, discussing Leno’s comments that he was under contract to NBC and couldn’t just leave the network, Richter added, cuttingly, " Multimillionaires are always being forced to do things they don’t want to do."

  1. You know, I’m really tired of Conan and his group criticizing Leno for taking back his job. Where was the outrage when Conan got Leno kicked out of his job originally? Conan is not the angel folks think he is. Never has he acknowledged that it was ok when Jay was #1 and been there for upteen years for Conan to kick Jay out but all of a sudden Jay is so awful because he’s doing what his company asked him to do! Jay is a company man. Conan and the gang, get over it. Move on.

  2. Oh plz shut up and get on with your life!!!
This guy is one of worst comics I have seen and he dares talk about Leno! Conan may have the right to do it but certainly NOT ANDY

  3. Plllease…stop the crying…grow up and move on! Jay – Conan – Conan – Jay…look at the world…who the H – ll cares…wish I could get tanked and walk with $30 MILLION….oh yeah forgot that did ya? …….DONE !

  4. Agreed…He’s just sounding like an overgrown baby. Do you think any one of these guys if they had the opportunity to get back the show that they made #1 and had taken away from them, would say no? If Conan is so amazingly talented, he should’ve taken the networks offer and proved them wrong, instead of running away like a cry baby.

  5. If it wasn’t for Leno, O’Brian wouldn’t be a multimillionaire, or anything for that matter today(w/o even going to work!)I can only WISH I had these PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I enjoy “snarkism” no matter what the source and Richter’s comment was
    gooooooooooood!
You can tell by all the hissing from
    the gallery of Leno devotees.
What surprises me is that after 17 years
of running the Tonight Show into the ground, Jay Leno has any fans at all!!

  7. I guess I should expect people on a TV biz post would NOT KNOW TELEVISION HISTORY!!!!!
    A. In 2004, Leno signed a contract extension with NBC which would keep him as host of The Tonight Show until 2009. Later in 2004, Conan O’Brien signed a contract with NBC under which O’Brien would become the host of The Tonight Show in 2009, replacing Leno at that time. O’Brien did NOT “kick” Leno out.
    B. Conan O’Brien was a writer and producer in the early 90’s for The Simpsons – arguably their best episodes were under his guidance. Pretty certain he was well compensated for his contributions.
    C. O’Brien’s a “baby” for what Andy Richter said? That means Leno is a baby for what people on HERE are saying in his defense!

  8. Mr. Andy should bless his lucky stars…he was never an announcer and never will be…sure, he read the words, but please.
As for the Leno/O’Brian situation? There was an Agreement signed in 2004 for there to be an orderly transition in 2009. The ratings didn’t pan out, NBC Programming made a change, a messy and expensive one, but, business is business.

  9. Turnabout fair play….Conan forced Leno out, Leno forces conan out….and Andy Conan is a multimillionaire himself, so let’s not shed any tears.

  10. Andy is just being funny, and funny it was. Leno really is the bad guy here, he’s a back stabber. Why not leave when NBC says we’re giving the show to Conan? Because Jay knew if Conan didn’t work out, he could snake his way back into the job. Andy is right in his assessment that Leno was all smiles and support, then turned on them. And Jay Leno had nothing to do with Conan’s success. Also, Andy didn’t walk away with 30 million bucks, Conan did. So get your facts straight first. Leno is a snake.

  11. My Stars! Someone get out the smelling salts, I’m having a spell.
Andy Richter has maybe the talent and the attention span of a housefly. It’s called Show Business for a reason, ya know.
Conan didn’t get the numbers at 11:30, didn’t hang onto Jay’s audience and barely brought over his own 12:30 audience. He had 17 years to build an audience, find his voice and he couldn’t do it. Jay didn’t push out Conan, Conan couldn’t deliver the numbers On His Own.
Leave Jay out of this, peeps. Conan’s an adult–he knew what the score was. He couldn’t hack the earlier time period. Period.

  12. Didn’t hang onto Leno’s audience? What audience? Leno was an abject failure at 10 pm. The network’s comments about profit margin are merely a face saving smoke screen. They knew that a 1.5 average would meet intense resistance, and they deliberately set that low bar expecting that it would never settle at that level. Maybe Jay could have done better if he had more time to BUILD an audience at the new time slot. What a concept!
Conan stated that he wanted to leave the network in 2004. The network enticed him to stay by offering the Late show FIVE YEARS LATER. That’s hardly the same as a scumbag who sabotages you by placing his ratings sinkhole of a show as a lead-in.

  13. Jay’s TTS audience.
    Sorry for either:
    a) my lack of clarity
    b) your lack of reading comprehension
Wipe the spittle off your chin. There’s a good boy.
