TiVo Losses Accelerating

Mar 9, 2010  •  Post A Comment

TiVo lost 730,000 subscribers over the 12 months ended Jan. 31, a 22 percent drop that left it with 2.605 million subscribers, Multichannel News reports.

That’s more than the 611,000 subscribers lost in the previous 12-month period.

Of TiVo’s total subscribers, the report says "1.140 million are via service providers including DirecTV and Comcast."

Also, the company reported a net loss of $10.2 million for the period, despite the fact revenue for the fourth quarter was up 15.7 percent, to $68.4 million.

Last week,TiVo won a major legal battle against Dish Network that is worth about $300 in damages.

  1. what will directv, comcast, and now rcn do when they are left with paperweights after tivo goes out of business..

  3. Perhaps more and more Tivo users are questioning why they should pay a continuous revenue stream just to exercise their fair use right to time-shift TV programs.
Tivo hitched themselves to the wrong star. They should have sided with consumers rather than trying to placate the movie/TV industry to avoid litigation.
Especially, and rather ironically, after Sony did all the hard work for them in the Supreme Court BetaMax case.

  4. I choose TiVo because it of the extra features it offers, which are not available on the crappy DVRs provided by cable operators. If TiVo goes under, I will soldier on, but will mourn the loss. Anyone who can’t understand my allegiance is someone who never owned a TiVo. Yes, they’re that good. I’m praying the TiVo patents will persuade some greedy multichannel operators to negotiate with TiVo. Comcast seems to “get it” but the CableCard solution is not working very well for me.

  5. Funny, I was thinking along the same lines. Adam
