U.S. TV Station for Sale…on Ebay!

Mar 12, 2010  •  Post A Comment

A TV station is for sale and the owner has made it available on Ebay, reports The New York Times.

According to the article, the station owner and manager, Bud Kelley, says he wants to sell it because he wants to retire and the popular call-in weekly bingo show airs at 7 p.m., too late for him.

The station is UHF outlet WMKG-LP, Channel 38 in Muskegon, Mich. The station, which hasn’t yet upgraded to digital, airs live talk shows and outdoor sports programming.

Kelley  has it listed on eBay for $700,000 but told The Times that he’d go as low as $500,000 cash for the venture, which he says is profitable. “It’s a real station, not a toy,” he told the paper.

  1. The FCC may have a few words for him and his responsibilites under his License Agreement…and how to put it on the market and on and on….

  2. Apparently he originally wanted 1 mil. for the station…I looked on eBay and that station is not worth 1 mil and I question whether or not it is worth 500,000…besides the analog transmitter all of the equipment shown in the pictures is at least 10 years old and some of it is consumer grade stuff (consumer VHS decks, even a consumer style camera in the studio)…every piece of equipment in that station is going to have to be replaced sooner rather than later…obviously the most valuable items are the spectrum space and the land/building…it might be a good buy…or a money pit….

  3. Of course, it is a low power station, so you’re going to find VHS machines and analog transmitters (LPTVs weren’t required to transition when the rest of us were). Half a million bucks for an LPTV license, and then you have to come up with programming…not thanks. I’m in market 5 and we’re run like an LPTV, so I’ve had enough of KMART TV!

  4. The reason the convergence from print & TV to web took so long is because the FCC and the DC techno-dummies were still licking transistor radio batteries instead of offering a rebuild of ancient rules governing over the air content delivery.
Now with a ten year broadband plan rolling out like a quadriplegic turtle cresting Pikes Peak, they must drop the rules for the dying media in order for small stations to gain some funds to complete their content transplants.
I say good luck to Kelley and anyone else looking to buy or sell dead horses.

  5. I would like to thank you for this post I find Foxy the cutest Bingo character yay for Foxey Bingo
