YouTube Phenom Lands Movie Deal with Nickelodeon, Hopes for Franchise Possibility

Mar 24, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Despite baffling adults with his shrill voice and annoying demeanor, YouTube sensation "Fred" is coming to Nickelodeon with a movie of his own, the New York Times reports. The network made the announcement during its upfront presentation in Los Angeles today.

The character, a six-year-old named Fred Figglehorn who frequently throws tantrums, was invented by Lucas Cruikshank, a 16-year-old from Nebraska. Cruikshank uploads videos as "Fred," and has racked up video views in the multimillions.

"Fred: The Movie" was shot in December, and has been shopping for a distributor since then, leaning towards a theatrical release. That didn’t happen, but "Fred" director-producer Brian Robbins is hoping the Nick connection leads to a larger "Fred" franchise.

The movie airs on Nick this summer.
