Animal Planet’s series "River Monsters" made quite an impression in its debut last Sunday night, becoming the network’s best-performing season premiere ever.

Extreme angler and biologist Jeremy Wade led the journey to Thailand telling the story of a massive freshwater stingray that can attack with a serrated 10-inch dagger like tail. The episode — "Death Ray" — was Animal Planet’s best season premiere ever, drawing more than 1.7 million P2+ viewers. "Monsters" is entering its second season.

“Clearly, audiences have responded to the mysteries of the deep that Jeremy takes them on in ‘River Monsters,’" said Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet Media.

“’River Monsters’ isn’t simply a fishing show… it’s a murder mystery with intriguing characters and a storyline with multiple twists and turns. And fans have been patient since it’s been nearly a year since we’ve had fresh new monsters to find.”
