HBO has announced the casting of the last major role in its 5-hour mini-series remake of a classic Academy Award-winning movie, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
Mare Winningham, herself an Oscar nominee and two-time Emmy-winner, has been cast as Ida Corwin in the upcoming "Mildred Pierce."
Ida is the close friend of the title character, who will be played by Kate Winslet in the HBO miniseries.
If you want to have some fun this weekend, rent the original, the 1945 Warner Bros. film noir melodrama that starred Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce. It’s s terrific popcorn crunching delight! The part that Winningham is set to play was played by the wisecracking Eve Arden.
Crawford won the Oscar for best actress for her role, and Arden was nominated in support, as was Ann Blyth, who does a great job playing the troublesome daughter of Mildred Pierce.
The movie was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
Both the original movie and the HBO remake is based on a book by James Cain.
